1.Introduction
The Anti-Alcoholic
Portuguese Society (SAAP) has been continually and exclusively
dedicating all of its action to the HELP, Recuperation and Promotion of
Alcoholism Prophylaxis and its consequences in Portugal. It maintains
its doors open to all human beings, men and women that everyday came in
contact with it seeking clinical treatment, humanitarian help and family
environment integration, professional and social that alcohol has
victimized.
All of us know that the
disease of Alcoholism affects not only the patient but all of his
family, embarking bio psychosocial damages, and that provokes physical
and psychic dependency.
In SAAP, never loosing
sight of its original motto, By Helping You Will Be Helped, constantly
living the ambition of retributing to our patients, associates and
friends the total capacity of living happily without alcohol, with
positive actions, in Solidarity, and Human Warmth and with the true
spirit of Voluntary action.
2. Conta
Comigo
The Official Organ of
the SAAP – “Conta Comigo” – maintained its perfect publication dedicated
to the esteemed associates and friends, throughout the year at stake
“2004”. It continued its habitual divulgence and information of the
alcohol related problems, always empowering the communications of
relevant interest to SAAP. The expenses of Impression and Expedition
have been increasing, fact witch lead to a reduction in the number of
pages. The help of our collaborators has also constituted a great
support in the edition of the several numbers throughout the year. We
hope that in coming years the same interest is maintained.
3.
Social Support/Social Work
The consequences of
Alcoholism are increasing in number in Portugal. That is why it is
necessary that urgent measures have to be taken in order to reduce the
alcohol consumption, and to implement by the means at our reach, in the
domain of school education, Public Health Prevention, in social
environments, Primary Health Care Centres, in Associations, near the
Orders and Syndicates, and general public.
In 2004, SAAP’s
telephone rang tirelessly, with Help seeking, in true despair, even in
Emergency cases, and truly grave cases, thanks to the SAAP’s message
inserted in the Portuguese Yellow Pages (PT). Everybody knocks at our
door, personally or by phone, having registered in 2004 the
extraordinary numbers of: 670 phone calls (approximately), about 311
personal contacts (relatives and friends included). We have welcomed
countless numbers of persons who wished to remain anonymous, especially
women, for having the shame of coming out – this is alcohol, a shameful
being that creates its victims, but does not identify with them. Leaving
them, in most cases wallowing in the “Mud”, neither knowing nor helping
them. That’s the reason for the existence of SAAP!
In good fortune, Dr.
Suzana Romeiro, ceased her collaboration with SAAP as a Clinical
Psychologist, due to the impossibility of maintaining supervision in the
field of Clinical Psychology. Also ceasing her collaboration with SAAP
was Dr. Madalena Reis, witch initiated a contract in October 1st
of 2003, ending it in September 30th of 2004.
3.1.
Alcohology
It is referred in the
SAAP’s statues that “the Association can coadunate the competent public
services and other institutions or entities in a inter helping spirit of
solidarity and collaboration, in an exclusively social work, with
non-profitable goals.” SAAP has effectively dedicated itself to HELPING,
contributing in this manner to the reduction of the increasing number of
alcoholics in Portugal. We have supported Alcoholic Patients (men and
women) in our Alcohology/Psychiatry Consults: Dr. Maria Antónia
Frasquilho – 57 consults (since 03/01/04); Dr. Teresa
Sá Nogueira – 26 consults (since 10/19/04), which enhances the good and
effective service that SAAP has provided to the Public Health Cause, not
only in Lisbon as well as in Portugal – patients, relatives and friends
seek our help from all over the country… mainly in the South Central
area.
Regarding internments,
we had fortunately only committed 2 patients: Hospital Miguel Bombarda
opened their door to us, has it is traditional by the Administration of
that Hospital Unit. A special thank to Dr. José Matos.
3.2.
Psychology
It is important to
register the extraordinary affluence of patients who seek SAAP, in
Clinical Psychology consults. Thanks to the extraordinary sense of
solidarity and respect towards SAAP’s patients, Dr Maria de Lourdes
Caraça, Dr. Ana Braz and Dr. Ana Sofia collaborated in Clinical
Psychology consultations in a total of 335, which mean indeed a
fantastic result in favour of the patients in route to recuperation in
SAAP.
Child Clinical
Psychology consults were initiated in SAAP under the responsibility of
Dr. Ana Sofia Ramada, targeted at children up to 12 years old and with
the support of Dr. Maria de Lourdes Caraça.
3.3.
Thematic Library
It has become a strong
habit the consultation of the SAAP’s thematic library by countless
students and persons interested in alcohol related problems.
We have also received
from an associate, friend and collaborator of SAAP a valuable
contribution-gift of Psychiatric, Alcohology and Medicine books and
magazines, that belonged to the distinguished and deceased MD. and
associate of SAAP, Dr. Gumerzindo da Silva Neves. A huge salute of
recognition to Dr. Maria Celeste Vieira Neves, for such a grateful
reminder of her husband to SAAP.

Group Awareness Reunions
In
February 4th, at Escola Secundária de
Almeirim regarding “Truth and Lies about Alcohol” directed to a group of
20 12th grade students.
In
February 17th, at Escola Secundária D. Fernando II, in Sintra,
directed to a group of 14 students.
We consider opportune
to mention some of the testimonials obtained near 2 students of the 9th
grade of said school, ispis verbis:
a)
This session was very good
in making us aware of the alcohol related questions. It was a good
reflection about how to behave in the long nights we spend at the clubs.
We enjoyed SAAP’s visit to our school to give us the knowledge about the
consequences of alcoholism.
b)
This formation action was
important, because I could formulate questions about alcohol that had
been unanswered till this date. I have learned a lot, and seen the main
concepts and problems that alcohol can cause. This kind of formation
should be included in the schools of our country, since we are one of
the countries with greatest level of alcoholism at a world range.
